SIAV - Sistema Informativo Archeologico Vesuviano (Vesuvian Archaeology Information System)
System manager: Dr. Anna Maria Sodo

SIAV, the acronym of Sistema Informativo Archeologico Vesuviano (Vesuvian Archaeology Information System), has its offices at the Data Processing Centre of the Boscoreale Excavation Site Office in via Settetermini. It was set up in 2001 with the aim of assembling archive, catalogue and cartographic data relating to the Vesuvian sites overseen by the Archaeological Superintendency of Pompeii’s and handles a large amount of systematized information.
One of the most extensive data compilations to date is the product of the activities carried out under the 'Neapolis' project which ran from 1986 to 1988 and was followed by several local as well as national projects.
The assembling of data involved the creation of a system that allows users to browse through the information starting from a search index.
Thanks to the creation of a directory and a single topographic reference, the Superintendency’s intranet facility can be used to consult information sheets on finds, paintings, watercolours, floors and excavation journals relating to floor plans and associated images.
Over the years the information base has been expanded to include various projects based on different systems and with different goals in mind. Two examples of such projects are “Un Piano per Pompei” (A Plan for Pompeii), a dedicated GIS system for the ancient city of Pompeii, and the production of an Archaeological Map.
A new vector mapping system with geographic markers was designed for the ancient city of Pompeii, which provides a vital reference point for the new GIS.
Recent activities involve the harmonization of different systems, the ongoing transfer of documentation from paper to digital format and the organization of data into a single filing and consultation system.

The Data Bank can be consulted by prior request. Requests should be addressed to the Superintendency and marked for the attention of the system manager Dr. Anna Maria Sodo.
