Regio VII Inauguration

REGIO VII INUGURATION
THE HOUSE OF SIRICUS AND THE HOUSE OF THE WOUNDED BEAR OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

NEW VISITOR FLOW DIRECTIONS FOR ACCESSING THE LUPANAR

Full public access to Regio VII is restored, at the end of stabilisation works conducted by the Great Pompeii Project. Within the Regio, at the heart of the archaeological area comprising the Forum, the House of the Wounded Bear and the House of Siricus will be open to the public for the first time.
The House of the Wounded Bear has been subject to stabilisation works as well as a restoration of the decorative elements, as part of the measures carried out in Regio VII; while the House of Siricus was subject to further restoration and reinforcement works undertaken by the Great Pompeii Project. The first three casts created by Giuseppe Fiorelli in 1863, damaged by the bombings in 1943 and recently restored by a special project of the GPP, will be relocated to one of the rooms of the domus.
The reopening of the principal street axes of Regio VII encouraged a revision of the direction of visitor flow for accessing the Lupanar, one of the most visited buildings of the site and which, due to the excessive and constant influx of visitors, experiences heavy congestion flows.
Under the new provisional route the Lupanar will be accessible exclusively along Vicolo della Maschera (the current exit) and entering the building from Vicolo del Balcone Pensile.
Following the visit, one exits onto Vicolo del Lupanare (the current entrance) and can:
  • turn right and visit the House of Siricus (entering from Vicolo del Lupanare and entering/leaving from Via Stabiana
  • return to Via dell’Abbondanza by crossing Vicolo del Lupanare
  • turn left along Vicolo degli Augustali, which the House of the Wounded Bear overlooks, and Vicolo Storto, which leads onto Via della Fortuna
