Month of the Grape Harvest

October, Month of the Grape Harvest
AT POMPEII, the traditional gathering of grapes

A traditional date in the Pompeian calendar, the grape harvest returns on Wednesday 25th October with the gathering of grapes from the vines of the Vineyard of the Summer Triclinium. On the occasion, the Vineyard of the Forum Boarium will also be opened to the public.

The project was experimentally born in 1994, on a limited area of the excavations, thanks to an agreement between the Archaeological Park of Pompeii and the Campanian wine producer Mastroberardino, which in addition to taking care of vineyards produces the acclaimed Villa of the Mysteries wine.

General Director Massimo Osanna and Professor Piero Mastroberardino will meet at 11:00 at the Vineyard of the Summer Triclinium to celebrate the day of the grape harvest, renewing this by now entrenched partnership aimed at developing the archaeological area and its features.

The areas concerned to date consist of all of the vineyards of Regiones I and II of Ancient Pompeii, stretching across a total of one hectare divided into 15 plots of land of varying size, with a potential yield of around 3,000kg of grapes.

The Villa of the Mysteries wine, produced from Piedirosso and Sciascinoso grapes, exhibits unique characteristics since it is made according to the viticultural techniques of two thousand years ago. In addition to being an excellent wine, it represents a way of telling the story of Pompeii, with its culture and ancient tradition, with a view towards developing the site, and at the same time defending its land, landscape and environment.

This activity forms part of the scientific research of one of the many studies conducted by the Laboratory of Applied Research at the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, which has always sought to analyse the relationship between Botany and Archaeology.
