Herculaneum. Three centuries of discoveries
Naples, National Archaeological Museum
until 1th June 2009
From 16th October, the National Archaeological Museum of Naples for the first time will host a large-scale exhibition dedicated to the extraordinary art works (sculptures, frescoes, inscriptions) that in near three centuries of discoveries have been revealed by the archaeological miracle of ancient Herculaneum.
Herculaneum has provided the richest and most complete testimonies of the ancient world also in relation to aspects and themes of everyday life and Roman society (religion, the domestic contex t, clothing, furnishings): organic materials of all types, carbonised, including fa b r i cs, papyri, wood, fuels, wax tablets, all invaluable sources of information for the “minor” and more eve ryday aspects of Roman civilisation.
This exhibition presents to the public for the first time almost all of the large statuary works from the Herculaneum, which belong to different periods in the history of the excavations and that determined the city’s different destiny as a place of preservation and thus also of potential benefit to the public.
On the occasion of the exhibition, the monumental atrium of the Museum returns to its ancient dignity as an exhibition space.
