Pompeii, Domus of Chaste Lovers on St Valentine's Day

Extraordinary preview for Art's Lovers

On the occasion of lovers’ Day 80 couples reserved at the Soprintendenza of Pompeii enjoyed a preview of one of the most beautiful Domus of the ancient city: the Domus of the Chaste Lovers. It was a rich baker’s house, its name comes from the decorative panel representing a chaste kiss of two lovers. It was brought to light in 1987, it has always been closed to the public.
For the first time, it has been possible to watch live archaeologists’ and restorers’ at work, sharing with them the fascination of discoveries. The initiative, promoted by the Special Chief Manager of the emergency in the archaeological areas of Naples and Pompeii, Marcello Fiori, among the various actions of valorization of the site, has enriched the national event organized by the Ministry for Arts and Culture “On St Valentine’s Day, art’s lovers”. In fact to celebrate the Day the Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali  has given to couples of visitors the chance of visiting cultural sites by paying just one ticket. The promotion aims at stimulating the fame and rediscovery of our artistic heritage, and at the valorization of a richness envied all over the world. “Thanks to this unique and innovative initiative visitors are able to feel live the emotion of the archaeological discovery, among the initiatives for the valorization and popularization of the site”, declares Marcello Fiori, explaining the characteristics of the yard-event.
The one hundred sixty special visitors have been the first ones to see the famous domus, that will be open to the public in March. A system of hanging flying bridges will give the chance to see from above the perfectly preserved oven of the bakery and the two stables with animal skeletons, a faithfully rebuilt garden and wonderful frescoes and mosaics. Multimedia technologies will reproduce the virtual reconstruction of the functions of various rooms. Visitors will be able to watch the archaeological work also from Via dell’ Abbondanza, through transparent panels. After years the yard has been put completely in safety and it has now a roof that assures its protection, preservation and valorization.
