Dogs have always been welcomed in the ancient city of Pompeii.
The dog represented in the Cave Canem mosaic, House of the Tragic Poet,
is the most famous evidence found in the various Houses.

(C)Ave Canem is a project aimed to take care and preserve the dogs living at the archaeological site of Pompeii, for the well being and safety of everyone.
(C)Ave Canem is promoting the adoption of our four legged friends: we want to help Meleagro, Plautus, Licinio, Eumachia, Vesuvius and all the other dogs to find a home. Would (will) you offer your hospitality?
The project, by the Commissario delegato for the emergency of Naples and Pompeii archaeological areas, is developed in cooperation with national organizations for animal rights as Lav-Lega Anti Vivisezione, Enpa- Ente Nazionale Protezione degli Animali and Lega nazionale per la difesa del cane. The aim is to solve the stray dogs problem in the ruins of Pompeii. The plan of actions is supported by the Ministry of Work, Wealth and Social Politics.
